Fencing Weekend in Dom sportova – The Vladimir Mažuranić Memorial
This annual sporting treat once again gathers the world’s best fencers in Zagreb
On almost twenty pistes at Dom sportova, on 19 and 20 January, a sporting treat, the 35th Vladimir Mažuranić Memorial, awaits fans of fencing. The Junior Fencing Cup in the foil is the biggest international junior tournament of the season. Zagreb last year hosted the largest number of international competitors and is on the way to repeating that success this season. A particular attraction of the competition is the fact that the Junior Fencing Cup in the floret provides points for the world ranking. The second day of the Memorial brings us the competitions in the senior categories in the disciplines of the foil and the épée.
The Vladimir Mažuranić Memorial is the oldest sporting event in Zagreb and is organised every year by the Fencing Association of Zagreb in memory of the doyen of fencing in Zagreb and Croatia, a sportsman of many years’ standing, Olympian and coach Vladimir Mažuranić. The renowned surname of the well-known teacher of fencing Vladimir Mažuranić is connected with the first Croatian ban commoner, the statesman and poet Ivan Mažuranić, from whom he is directly descended. Apart from his surname Mažuranić was famed for the results he achieved. He took part in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, he learned fencing from famous teachers including Dr Franjo Bučar. The organisers of this international event are the Croatian Fencing Association and the Fencing Association of Zagreb.
