Floraart 2015

This year’s international garden exhibition will be marking its 50th birthday, and for the first time it will last a full week, between May 25th and 31st at Bundek Lake.

The international garden show Floraart is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. The jubilee will be marked in a special way, with an array of events at Zagreb’s main square and the Upper Town, where the garden exhibition entitled Flower Fair first started half a century ago. Several years ago the event was moved to Bundek Lake. To mark the jubilee, this year’s exhibition will last a full week, between May 25th and 31st.

The Floraart garden exhibition is one of Zagreb’s attractions and one of the city’s well recognized brands, and it has been drawing visitors in their droves since day one. Old newspaper articles reveal that the first Flower Fair was visited by as many as 150 thousand people, which caused an unprecedented crowd on Tomićeva Street where visitors were queuing to board the funicular to the Upper Town. Until this day, the interest in the exhibition has not dwindled. On the contrary, it has kept growing, so much so that the fair frequently had to change venues due to spatial limitations. The tradition of horticultural events in Zagreb has roots in the late 19th century, and the first gardening exhibitions started taking place in the early 20th century. All of this was preceded by the cultivation of medieval gardens, which later evolved into the city’s prominent park culture, represented by Maksimir Park and the complex of parks that comprise the so-called Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe, a major landmark of Zagreb’s urban identity.
