Free film evenings under the stars

Under the starry sky and in the old city centre, Zagreb offers yet another attractive summer program: film evenings of the Gradec Summer Cinema. Good weather permitting, there will be a film projection every evening, starting at 9 p.m., between the 2nd and the 24th of August; admission is free.

This August, a beehive of activity will surround Gradec, one of the oldest parts of central Zagreb, from where the city first began expanding in the 13th century. Citizens and tourists will flock to the area as a result of the city’s new entertainment program: the Gradec Summer Cinema. Films will be projected all month long, under the starry sky, for free.

Projections of films, mostly high budget European and American films, begin on Monday August 2nd and, by August 24th, visitors will have had an opportunity to view 23 films, weather permitting. The programme will be opened by the Spanish film “Volver” directed by the famous Pedro Almodovar. The following nights, in chronological order, will feature projections of: “A Serious Man”, “From Subway With Love”, “The Hurt Locker”, “In the Loop”, “Up and Down, Loop the Loop”, “Tales From the Golden Age”, the Czech movie “Takva – A Man’s Fear of God”, “Halloween 2”, “Broken Embraces”, “Empties”, “Police, Adjective”, “The Box”, “Nine”, “Daybreaks”, “Saw 6”, “The Reader”, “The Road”, “Wrong side Up“, “Milk”, “Tropa de Elite”, and “Looking for Eric”. The cinema will officially close with “I Served the King of England”, directed by the famous Czech filmmaker Jiri Menzel.

The Gradec Summer Cinema will be located between the church of St. Catherine and the Upper Town high school, and there will be a total of 150 seats available.
