Health Tourism Continues to Develop

Zagreb County has allocated funds for the construction of indoor and outdoor swimming pools at the Special Hospital for Medical Rehabilitation Naftalan in Ivanić Grad which will give a new impetus to the development of health tourism.

Funds for the further development of health tourism at the Special Hospital for Medical Rehabilitation Naftalan in Ivanić Grad have been allocated by its owner, the County of Zagreb. A portion of the funds will go towards financing the plans for the construction of indoor and outdoor swimming pools, another portion towards financing scientific research of the naphthalene oil therapy and its beneficial effects, and the final portion will be invested in maintaining the 9001:2000 ISO standards.

Naftalan, a special hospital for medical rehabilitation, is located on the gentle slopes of Moslavačka Gora, 27 kilometers from Zagreb. It was constructed on sources of medicinal oil, which are unique and one of a kind in Europe. The oil in question is naphthalene, a specific and very rare type of oil used in the treatment and rehabilitation of skin, rheumatic and other diseases and conditions. The source is indeed very rare – there is just one other source with the same medicinal properties in Baku in Azerbaijan.

Although the Special Hospital Naftalan’s capacity is relatively small, a total of 111 hospital beds, it does not offer just medical treatments to its users. There are also relaxation and beauty programs supplemented by a gastronomy offer. The construction of new indoor and outdoor swimming pools will upgrade the quality of health tourism, which will benefit even further by the construction of an ethno-house on the hospital grounds.
