Home of Croatian Visual Artists: Exhibition of Slavko Kopač Oeuvre

Exhibition: Slavko Kopač takes visitors through the oeuvre of the artist who had a strong influence on Croatian and French visual art scene of the second half of the 20th century.

An exhibition by Slavko Kopač, a Croatian and French artist (born in Vinkovci in 1913 and died in Paris in 1995) is available until 27 March 2022 in the Home of Croatian Visual Artists, which citizens of Zagreb also refer to as the Meštrović Pavilion. His oeuvre had a strong impact on Croatian, French and European art scene in the second half of the 20^th century. What is more, together with artists with whom he worked, Slavko Kopač started trends in Paris, which was the centre of artistic world at the time.

The exhibition in Zagreb provides a comprehensive overview of the work of Slavko Kopač and encompasses sculptures and poetry in addition to visual works. The exhibits have been collected from museums and private collections. They shed light on cultural and anthropological circumstances in Zagreb, Vinkovci, Florence and Mostar, cities in which the artist lived, was educated, advanced his skills and worked. In addition to pieces in the Meštrović Pavilion, art installations connected to Kopač’ artistic work will also be put up in the exterior.

This exhibition is also an attempt to familiarize visitors with his creative work and put it in the time frame. This renowned artist gained fame as one of the most prominent protagonists of Informel and Art Brut, art movements which reject conventional forms of communication and approaches to creation. In this artistic framework, Slavko Kopač created timeless art pieces characterised by increasingly important messages of peace and inclusion.
