After her last successful concert in the Croatian capital, held in 2008 at the Culture Factory (Tvornica Kulture), the legendary country diva, Joan Baez, will once again perform in Zagreb, on October 19th at the Student Centre cinema.
On October 19th, the Student Centre cinema will be the venue for a concert by legendary country singer Joan Baez. This activist and great human rights advocate last performed in Zagreb in 2008, when she held a concert at the Culture Factory (Tvornica Kulture).
Joan Baez has been active on the music scene for over fifty years. She began her career as a singer of Anglo-American traditional songs and ballads, accompanying herself on guitar. Since 1963, when she became friends with Bob Dylan, she started performing songs dealing with political issues. In her fight for global rights she backed numerous political leaders, such as Martin Luther King, and she was a great inspiration for former president of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel. She protested against the war in Vietnam and against the war in Iraq forty years later. She also participated in the first Amnesty International tour, as well as the 90th birthday celebration for Nelson Mandela in London.
In 1960, Joan Baez released her debut album, which ensured her a spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame. The following year she released the album “Joan Baez, Vol. 2”, and in 1964 she released the album “Joan Baez/5”. All three albums went gold, and she remained at the top of the charts for two whole years. She released her latest studio album, “Day After Tomorrow”, in 2008, to much critical acclaim, and it also earned her a Grammy nomination.
Joan Baez has won numerous other music awards, among them the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, while she also received an Amnesty International Award in 2012 for her huge contribution to the global struggle for human rights.
