Martićeva Street - Design District Zagreb - a New Design Festival
Between June 16th and 19th, a new festival, Design District Zagreb will take place at Martićeva Street. Apart from exhibitions of works by architects, designers and various other creative authors, there will be a programme of events for visitors.
The new festival Design District Zagreb will take place between June 16th and 19th in a Zagreb’s neighborhood whose main artery is Martićeva Street. The eastern part of the city centre, surrounded by Šubićeva, Zvonimirova, Draškovićeva, Vlaška and central Martićeva streets features numerous abandoned and vacant industrial and business premises that have been turned into interesting places for creative and cultural events over the past several years and thus the entire area is being reinvented as an increasingly propulsive creative community. Martićeva Street is the location of the Croatian Design Superstore, where the idea of this new design festival was conceived by its author Ira Payer. The goal of the project is to create a network of creative potentials from that part of the city which will provide this pleasant residential neighborhood with a new facet and lure tourists with a variety of contents and programmes. Zagreb, like many other cities in Europe, looks to its faded industrial heritage for possibilities to organize various cultural events and encourage a creative and urban development of the city.
During the four day festival, architects, designers, artists and various other creative individuals will exhibit their works in vacant stores and on the public surfaces, and they will also be joined by caterers and other business owners located on Martićeva. Apart from an exhibition, the festival will also feature a diverse concurrent programme with various workshops and happenings that are typical of that neighbourhood of Zagreb and that will highlight its rich architectural heritage.
This multifaceted and multidisciplinary project is backed by the Zagreb Tourist Board and the City Office for Strategic Planning and Development of the City since the urban development of that zone fits in with the strategic city project related to the regeneration of the Badel industrial complex and construction of cultural features.
