A large exhibition, the Murtić Donation, will open in the magnificent building of the Museum of Contemporary Art in the beginning of December. The exhibition consists of more than 1500 works which, according to the wishes of the great Croatian artist, Edo Murtić, were donated to the city of Zagreb by his family after his death. The donation includes the artist’s opus, dating from 1941 until his death in 2005.

Edo Murtić is one of the most representative painters of Croatian modern art in the 20th century. Born near Bjelovar in 1921, his family moved to Zagreb four years later, where he subsequently graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1935, he organized his first independent exhibition in Zagreb; throughout his prolific artistic career he held some 150 independent exhibitions as well as 300 group exhibitions worldwide. He often travelled to France, America and Italy, and he lived abroad for some time.

The exhibition will remain open until January 31st 2011. Concurrently, there will also be a discussion about the contents of the Murtić Donation in comparison with similar donations by great painters throughout Europe. After the exhibition closes, the works from the Murtić Donation will be exhibited in a special institution, for which adequate space is still being sought, in order to present the opus of this prolific artist in one place.
