Plays at Opatovina

The Histrion theater troupe will, once again, be staging their traditional and always attractive open-air plays every day throughout the summer at the Upper Town’s Opatovina.

One of the highlights of cultural events that will be taking place in Zagreb throughout the summer months is the 23rd Histrion Summer. Like in previous years, the Histrion theater troupe will perform open-air plays every day at the Upper Town’s Opatovina. Between July 7th and August 1st, the program of the event features a performance of the play “Hypochondriac”; between the 4th and the 9th of August “Croatian Chicken-shack”, and between the 11th and the 29th of August “The Zagreb Orchestra”. The Histrion troupe has always attracted audiences with their virtuoso acting as well as the humorous content of the plays on their repertoire which are a wonderful illustration of certain anomalies that our everyday life is so heavily ridden with. Last but not least, the reason for the popularity of the event, for which the tickets are always sold out, is the authentic setting of the performances which are staged in the old Upper Town.

The Histrion theater troupe was founded in 1975 by Zlatko Vitez who has been with the ensemble ever since and nowadays holds the positions of its art director and organizer. The idea underlying its foundation was to spread the idea and message of the theater throughout all of Croatia, including its smallest villages. Although the troupe did not have its own theater for a long time and no permanent address, which is the reason why it was considered a travelling theater, the Histrion troupe staged over 50 premieres and performed them not only across Croatia, but also across Europe and America. Two years ago, the Histrion troupe finally got its own theater on Zagreb’s longest street – Ilica. In case of rain, they can now move from the open air stage at Opatovina and start their performances on time, at 9 p.m.
