Row across the lake, explore and enjoy the wilderness
After more than 50 years, visitors of Zagreb’s Zoo can finally, once again, row a boat across the lake that surrounds the animal enclosures in Maksimir Park. Since the Zagreb Zoo recently celebrated its jubilee 85th birthday, there are numerous other surprises lined up.
Like every summer, the Zagreb Zoo is embarking on a real adventure, complemented by several new inhabitants and a celebratory mood. In honour of its 85th birthday, the Zoo has once again, after 50 years, introduced rental boats that visitors can row across the famous First Lake of Maksimir Park.
The ride begins at the right bank within the Zoo grounds. Visitors row themselves and they may cross the entire lake. Apart from enjoying the ride, they can learn many interesting stories about the history of Maksimir Park and the Zoo’s past, as well as the latest information about their current inhabitants.
Boats pass by the Echo Pavilion and the Tower, which were built in the early 20th century, and around Swan Island, which provides an opportunity to row amongst numerous ducks and swans.
Boat rides are organized on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays starting at 10 a.m.
The summer adventure at the Zoo will be mostly enjoyed by youngsters as the popular school programme “Wild Summer” is once again taking place this season. It is a five day programme in which children can interact with wild animals in order to get to know the world of nature, as well as some interesting science facts. Among other adventures, there will be an organized boat exploration trip along the lake and the preparation of food for the animals, such as ice cream for bears. Children will also have an opportunity to groom animals, make toys and feeders for the animals, and participate in biological research… And each little participant will take home the “Zoo Explorer” diploma.
