The construction of the largest water-park in Croatia

The reconstruction of the Šmidhen water-park will bring back the glory days of a favored weekend destination of Zagreb’s citizens who once flocked to Samobor for a day of swimming and the various other activities that the water-park offered.

The construction of the Šmidhen water-park in Samobor, a onetime favored weekend destination of Zagreb’s citizens, will begin by the end of the year. It will be the largest water-complex in this part of Europe, spreading over almost ten hectares of land. The plan was designed by the Zagreb Institute for Urban Development. Before it is adopted by the Samobor city council, any relevant objections can be raised during a round of public debates which will last until July 1st.

A public presentation of the plan’s design will be held on June 9th at the City Hall in Samobor. The plan includes the construction of an indoor swimming-pool complex with restaurants, a wellness and fitness center, saunas etc.; and an outdoor complex with an Olympic sized pool with stands, a pool with a diving tower and water-slides, a wave pool, as well as green surfaces for sun-tanning and an open–air stage. The construction was preceded by complex geologic and hydrologic research, during which it was determined that the temperature of underground waters in the area ranges between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius. However, the new water-park will not be built atop the old bore-holes but a new one will be drilled. The adoption of this plan represents the first step in developing a complete plan of documents for the entire area, which includes the construction of a hotel and an amusement-park. With the construction of the water-park at Šmidhen, the complex not far from Zagreb will regain its old glow and, with its new facilities, it will surely attract even more weekenders than it did before.
