The Day of the Tie Celebration

Croatia is the homeland of the tie, a universally recognized and valued symbol of politeness and business efficiency. The Day of the Tie was marked on 18 October. On that day, four years ago, a spectacular event, “Tie”, was staged around the Arena in Pula. The media brought the happening to over a billion people. Zagreb also took part in marking the day of one of the best known Croatian legacies and a recognizable souvenir of Croatia and Zagreb.

The Tourist Board of the City of Zagreb played an active role in marking the Day of the Tie. An appropriately dressed couple drove around Zagreb in a horse-drawn carriage and informed the citizens about the significance of the day. In front of the Tourist Information Center at Ban Jelačić Square, the main Zagreb square, a street organ also drew the attention of passersby to the marking of the Day of the Tie. The little train, Bubi, sported tie-related decorations. Songs about the tie, sung by a children's choir, resounded from the little train during its travels through the streets of Zagreb. A concert dedicated to the Day of the Tie was held by the Zagreb Philharmonic orchestra, and the national ensemble, Lado, performed a string of songs and dances wearing their national costumes complemented with ties.

A number of Croatian cities marked the Day of the Tie with different cultural events, as did some cities around the world with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integrations of the Republic of Croatia.

The initiative for marking the Day of the Tie in the Republic of Croatia was launched by Academica Cravatica in order to promote the tie as part of the Croatian, European and global cultural heritage.

The tie is a universally recognized and valued symbol of politeness, distinction, festivity and dignity. As a fashion accessory, it first appeared tied around the necks of Croatian soldiers in the 17th century. Today, the tie is one of the greatest promoters of Croatia and Croats, and at the same time, a distinct and recognized symbol of Croatia.
