The Nutcracker in December

Again this year, during the period leading up to the Christmas holidays, the Croatian National Theatre will stage the ballet The Nutcracker, which has been enjoyed by many generations of Zagreb’s citizens ever since it was first put on the repertoire of this theatre in 1931.

If you love ballet, make sure to plan an evening out at the Croatian National Theatre where the ballet The Nutcracker is performed every year during the period leading up to Christmas. Many generations of Zagreb’s citizens do not miss the opportunity to attend this classic ballet fairytale by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The ballet was first performed at the Croatian National Theatre in December 1931 and has become a traditional part of the theatre's programme.

The Nutcracker was the last of three ballets composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who enjoyed escaping into the world of children's fairytales in the latter part of his life. The libretto of the ballet, which takes place around Christmas, is based on Hoffmann's story for children, which was adapted by Dumas’ son. Together with his loyal associate and choreographer, Marius Petipa, he transformed the story into a ballet libretto. This season the audience can look forward to seeing their favourite ballet fairytale with a new set and costumes by designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno.

The performances of The Nutcracker at the Croatian National Theatre have been scheduled to take place on the 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 21st, 23rd, 28th and 30th December 2011 and on 4th January 2012.
