Top class concerts at the Zagreb Youth Theatre
After a fantastic concert by jazz diva Cassandra Wilson, which opened the 10th Vip Zagreb Jazz Festival in early April, the year-long event at the Zagreb Youth Theatre will continue with performances by the very talented singer Amira Medunjanin and the fantastic Carla Bley Trio.
This year’s 10th Vip Zagreb Jazz Festival, taking place for the entire year in order to celebrate its jubilee, will feature concerts by singer Amira Medunjanin performing Bosnian traditional music – sevdalinke, on May 15th at the Zagreb Youth Theatre, and the Carla Bley Trio on June 5th. This year’s Vip Zagreb Jazz Festival was opened in early April at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall with a top-class performance by jazz diva Cassandra Wilson.
Singer Amira Medunjanin, nicknamed the Bosnian Billie Holiday, is a versatile artist who added a modern twist and some of her own personality to traditional music that is hundreds of years old. She has worked with top class musicians, including the renowned Mostar Sevdah Reunion band. She released her debut album, “Rosa”, in 2005, receiving great reviews across Europe, especially in Great Britain where the album was nominated for album of the year in several categories. She later released two more studio albums, and she will be promoting her latest release during the concert at the Zagreb Youth Theatre.
Apart from this excellent artist, on June 5th, Zagreb’s Youth Theatre will also be the venue for a concert by the fantastic Carla Bley, backed for years now by bassist Steve Swallow and British soprano and tenor-saxophonist Andy Sheppard. The master pianist, organist, composer and jazz orchestra leader, Carla Bley, is a very highly regarded jazz performer and the winner of numerous awards for her compositions and musical arrangements, including multiple Grammies.
