Traditional ballet performances of “The Nutcracker”
The Nutcracker, one of the favourite shows among ballet aficionados, was first performed in Zagreb in 1931. A traditional part of the Croatian National Theatre's repertoire around the time of the Advent, now it is your turn to find out why this ballet fairytale is a favourite among numerous citizens of Zagreb.
Every year, around the time of the Advent, the Croatian National Theatre ballet repertoire features “The Nutcracker”. The classic ballet fairytale by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky has been a tradition for numerous generations of Zagreb’s citizens. It was first performed at the Croatian National Theatre in December 1931, and has traditionally been part of the theatre’s annual programme ever since.
The storyline of the ballet takes place at Christmas time and it is one of the favourite shows among numerous ballet aficionados. It is being performed by more than 120 dancers of all ballet generations – ballet school students, the choir, the soloists, as well as retired ballet dancers, which gives additional charm to this ballet fairytale.
The latest ballet performance has been reconstructed according to the show established in 1970 by renowned choreographer, Waczlaw Orlykowski. Working with the Ballet Ensemble, he has left a deep trace on the development of the art of ballet at the Croatian National Theatre. In this year’s ballet repertoire, “The Nutcracker” will be performed on December 16th, 18th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 28th and 30th of 2010, as well as on January 4th 2011.
