As of recently, foreign visitors can experience Zagreb from the interesting perspective of the famous women who have left their stamp upon the town they have lived in. They are the main theme of the newest walking tour which is organized every Friday starting at 5 p.m. under the name “Women of Zagreb”.
A new themed tour of the city gives visitors an opportunity to “meet” the well-known, and lesser-known, women who have marked Zagreb’s past as well as present and who have given a new dimension to many of the city's localities.
The English-speaking tour was conceived by two ladies, Iva Čaleta and Dora Fila, members of the Association of Tour Guides of Zagreb, and they will personally guide tourists on interesting one and a half hour tours of the city.
The tour begins at the main city square, the square of Ban Josip Jelačić, and the legend of the beautiful Manda and the Manduševac wishing well. It continues towards the cathedral, from which Mt. Medvednica can be seen. The mountain is mentioned in many stories about the witches of Zagreb, but it also played a key role in the successes of a modern icon: skier Janica Kostelić. At Zagreb’s best known Green Market, Dolac, the guides will present the tradition of the women who work there, as well as reminisce about the first female chimney sweeper of Zagreb, who lived nearby. Tkalčićeva, one of the most popular streets in Zagreb, tells a story of the eventful history marked by the first Croatian female journalist and writer, Marija Jurić Zagorka. The tour continues towards Gradec, where stories about the first female students in Zagreb can be heard, as well as stories about the first female radio host as well as many other well-known and lesser-known female citizens of Zagreb.
The tour ends at Cvjetni trg (Flower Square) with the story about the first Miss Zagreb, because this area is the best-known contemporary “catwalk” for numerous celebrities and those who want to be seen.
