Zagreb's main square is among the most beautiful in Europe

Visitors of the most popular Belgian blog, Steden Tripper, have included Zagreb’s main Square of ban Josip Jelačić among the 20 most beautiful squares in Europe.

According to research by one of the most popular Belgian blogs, the “Steden Tripper”, the Square of ban Josip Jelačić in Zagreb is one of the 20 most beautiful squares in Europe. The visitors of the blog were requested to rate the squares across European cities, and Zagreb’s main square made it to the 20th position according to those ratings. First on the list is the Grote Markt of Brussels, followed by Moscow’s Red Square, and the Place Stanislas in the French city of Nancy.


Among 20 of the most beautiful squares in Europe, according to visitors of the blog, is the Trafalgar Square in London, the Marienplatz in Munich, St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Piazza San Marco in Venice, etc.


The Square of ban Josip Jelačić is the central square of Zagreb; however, long ago, there existed in its place a market for various goods as well as the departure point for passenger carriages. In the 18th century the square was named Harmica; however, between the mid-nineteenth century and the Second World War, it was renamed after the Croatian ban: Josip Jelačić. After the Second World War, its name was changed to “Republic Square”, but after Croatia became an independent state it was once again renamed as the Square of ban Josip Jelačić.
