A hundred years of Croatian costume and set design

An exhibition, organized by the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts and the Croatian National Theatre, will be open until January 22nd in a total of four locations. The event will take place to celebrate a hundred years of Croatian costume and set design.

The history of Croatian set design, as an independent artistic profession, began in 1909 when painter Branimir Šenoa was hired as a set designer at the Croatian National Theatre. Since then, set design has become one of the key aspects in creating stage plays and entailed costume design until mid-20th century, when it started developing into a separate artistic craft. Over those one hundred years, the Croatian theatre scene has been marked by unique works by many great artists, including the aforementioned Branimir Šenoa, Tomislav Krizman, Pavle Froman, Ljubo Babić, Marijan Trepše, Sergej Glumac, Mišo Račić, Dorian Sokolić, Aleksandar Augustinčić, Zlatko Bourek, Drago Turina, Marija Žarak, Ksenija Jeričević, Doris Kristić, and many others.

To celebrate this impressive hundred-year anniversary, the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts (ULUPUH) and the Croatian National Theatre have teamed up and prepared a month-long exhibition. This display will be open until January 22nd at four locations: the Home of the Croatian Association of Artists, the foyer of the Croatian National Theatre, the gallery of the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts at Tkalčićeva 14, and the building of the Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts at Preradovićeva 44.
