A nostalgic journey through the past

Between Friday and Sunday, Ban Josip Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac and Maksimir parks, the Dolac green market, the popular Tkalča Street, as well as many streets in the Upper Town, will be particularly lively… Time will seem to have stopped and you will recognize music, clothes and customs from some other, nostalgic times, which you can now experience thanks to the Zagreb Time Machine.

From mid-April until September 29th, Zagreb’s streets, squares and Maksimir Park will feature the Zagreb Time Machine, nine different events which are being organized for the sixth consecutive year by the Zagreb Tourist Board.

Every Friday and Saturday, there will be opportunities to buy fruit and vegetables at the Dolac green market from the “kumice” – women dressed in traditional folk-wear typical of Zagreb’s past, who have fed the citizens of Zagreb throughout history. In other locations, at Dolac, on Tkalčićeva Street and Ban Josip Jelačić Square, folklore performances will provide insight into tradition and customs, while the performers will hand out fruit and traditional delicacies in the manner of good hosts.

On Saturdays, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Music Pavilion at Zrinjevac Park will feature promenade concerts, while at the same time on Sundays, visitors will be able to enjoy salon music in Maksimir Park, near the viewing point.

Street musicians will also perform in the Upper Town on weekends between 10 a.m. and noon. On Saturdays, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., the romantic atmosphere on the streets of the Upper Town will be complemented by costumed characters from Zagreb’s past, such as journalist and novelist Marija Jurić Zagorka, the city guard, the newspaperman, and many others... On Saturdays and Sundays, exactly at noon, tourists can enjoy a very attractive changing of the ceremonial guard in front of the church of St. Mark.

As of late June, on Thursdays and Fridays, Tkalčićeva Street will be a venue of great entertainment and music thanks to Tkalčijana – a festival of street musicians and performers. On Fridays, starting in early July, you will be able to dance the night away to different tunes resounding across Zrinjevac Park. The list doesn’t end there; in fact, it might just be the beginning – an excellent beginning…
