Art Pavilion: Exhibition Zagreb, City of Female Artists

Zagreb, City of Female Artists is the first this year’s exhibition in the Art Pavilion in Zagreb. It addition to providing excellent artistic experience, it also honours talented women who were stronger than sometimes restricting social norms.

The exhibition Zagreb, City of female Artists, which will be open in the Art Pavilion from 6 February to 12 April, has been organised in the occasion of the Croatian presidency of the Council of the European Union, to honour Zagreb as the capital of the presiding country.  

Croatian woman artists from the end of the 19^th century until today, to whom this exhibition is dedicated, left their indelible mark in the history of visual art in Zagreb, and therefore the overall Croatian art scene. The exhibition provides a historical and critical cross-section of their oeuvre and it is subdivided into three historically logical units. The first will cover the generations that were at work up to World War II, the second, those generations who started their exhibition activity after World War II and in the following decades and the third unit comprises the oeuvre of the generations who appeared on the scene in the early seventies and later, and are still at work.

The exhibition will cover around hundred works of art, among which paintings, sculptures, video performances, audio and video installations. There is an impressive list of female artists whose works won acclaim on Croatian but also on world art scene.  Each with their own story, sometimes dealing with prejudice which female artists face on their road to success, these artists invested their personality and pushed boundaries of visual arts.

In addition to the exhibition, there are side events whose aim is to also encompass a wider social context of the position of all women, especially artists, and provide an answer to the always ongoing issue of what global and local community and we as individuals can do to improve it.
