Cameras Watch over the Streets of Zagreb

Despite the fact that tourists perceive Zagreb as one of the safest European cities, measures will be put in place to make Zagreb even safer. Following the examples of some other European cities, Zagreb will add a network of 300 cameras to those already operating at the busiest traffic hubs, which will monitor all the thoroughfares and crossroads under the control of the Center for Automatic Traffic Control.

The cameras will monitor traffic around the clock and help to adjust traffic lights in order to provide for a smoother flow of traffic. This will reduce the emission of harmful exhaust gases and fuel consumption by one tenth and cut travel time by as much as one quarter.

The Zagreb Police state that cameras are placed in public places to control traffic but also to provide additional security for citizens and tourists at all times of the day.

According to the experiences of European countries, security cameras in public places help law enforcement agencies solve crimes. They are instrumental in improving the state of peace and order, and they help regulate traffic and even prevent offences. Likewise, cameras can protect and monitor the work of the police and they are a significant step forward in providing a feeling of safety, freedom of movement, and ultimately, an extended welcome to all tourists.
