Flyers of the big sky

Until the end of the year, the Croatian Natural History Museum in the Upper Town will feature an exhibition "Flyers of the Big Sky", organized to commemorate one hundred years of bird ringing in Croatia.

Until the end of the year, the Croatian National History Museum in the Upper Town will feature an exhibition, "Flyers of the Big Sky", organized in cooperation with the Institute of Ornithology at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, in order to commemorate one hundred years of bird ringing in Croatia. Due to early bird studies, Croatia is among five main European centres for bird ringing. The Institute was founded back in 1901 as the Croatian Ornithological Centre, and it began coordinating bird ringing in 1910. During that period, over one million birds were ringed, which provided valuable data for further scientific research.

The Institute of Ornithology boasts the most complete library of books and magazines in Croatia as well as this part of Europe, as well as a very valuable collection of bird feathers and eggs; it contains more than eight thousand of them, some of which date from the 19th century. Since 1996, an Ornithological station on the island of Cres has also been in operation as part of the Institute's activities.

Considering the educational character of this exhibition, it is certain to attract numerous children on school visits, and provide them with an opportunity to learn more about birds in general, their species, why only some of them migrate, as well as how they are able to fly such great distances…
