Fossils as inspiration in fashion design

Do you know what fossils and fashion design have in common? You have a chance to find out before the beginning of March next year if you visit the Croatian Natural History Museum where an interesting exhibition titled “Sutures, Structures, Textures” is being held. The exhibition is an unusual representation of the ties between geology and palaeontology as inspiration for new design motifs!

Since recently, Zagreb-based fans of palaeontology and geology, the sciences that study fossils, can find out how to implement the old in a new, modern context thanks to an exhibition which is taking place until the beginning of next year at the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb.

The exhibition titled “Sutures, Structures, Textures” represents an unusual blend of geology and palaeontology with fashion design, and it presents the world of fossils found in Croatia.

In an educative way, but thematically as accessible to the modern population as possible, the exhibition is a display of fossils as an inspiration for new details in fashion design. History is presented in a unique and unprecedented way, so fans of geology as well as design alike will equally enjoy the exhibition and gain valuable knowledge. The exhibition takes quite a revolutionary approach to presenting natural history materials, which are almost always presented quite pragmatically and one-sidedly, focusing only on their age and habitat.

All of the items featured in this exhibition are presented in two dimensions – as part of a historic context, but also as part of the modern world in which they serve as an inspiration for new motives rooted in the tradition and cultures of the peoples whose habitats they shared.

Therefore, visitors will have an opportunity to see most of the geology and palaeontology holdings of the museum, including a reconstruction of an ice-age woolly mammoth, long kept away from the public eye, which will undoubtedly be a great inspiration for fashion details, new textile textures and unusual creations…

The exhibition was opened in early October, and it has already attracted the attention of Zagreb’s citizens as well as tourists visiting the city.
