Did you know that one of the most popular tourist attractions in Zagreb, the Mirogoj Park Cemetery, can be explored by electromobile or minibus? The daily service is free of charge, and this fact will be much appreciated by those who wish to visit it on a hot summer day.

The Mirogoj Park Cemetery is not only the last resting place of our loved ones but also a beautiful park and an outdoor open gallery for which it is rightfully considered by many as being one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Mirogoj's best know feature is certainly the magnificent arcade; a design masterpiece by the German architect Herman Bolle. The 500-metre-long neo-renaissance arcades with 20 cupolas constitute a monumental composition which was certainly one of the most impressive projects of the European historicism movement. Herman Bolle worked on it between 1879 and 1917. He also designed the Chapel of Christ the King. The attractions continue with the rest of the cemetery’s architecture, which blends harmoniously with the environment, pavilions, as well as the sculpture gallery for which this cemetery has often and not surprisingly been dubbed the Croatian Pantheon. Besides being the last resting place for many notable individuals, the cemetery provides visitors with the opportunity to admire the artistic genius and talent of the great architect. Another point of attention is the Crematorium, a work by architects from Zagreb (Hržić, Krznarić and Mance) whose modern design was inspired by tradition.

The crematorium building is barely visible from the street. It blends well with the gentle folds of the hilly terrain on which it was developed. However, visitors will appreciate its full scale and practical value only as they step into its curvy hallways and reach the large ceremonial halls, magnificent in terms of their architectural solutions. The larger of the two halls is separated from the atrium where final farewells are bid. It has a semicircular glass partition which can be lifted as needed so that the two areas can be used as one. The glass partition of the small hall commands an impressive view of the whole valley with the Urn Grove.

Electromobile and minibus rides through the Mirogoj Cemetery and the Crematorium are provided every day between 7:30 A.M. and 3 P.M. The mini-van service to the Urn Grove operates every day between 8 A.M. and 4 P.M. until All Saints’ Day, but it may occasionally be suspended due to bad weather conditions.
