In the company of the witches of the Upper Town

As a city with a very turbulent and interesting past, Zagreb offers a variety of creative sightseeing tours based on historic events which occurred there. One of the newest such tours will familiarize guests with the witches of the Upper Town. Not only will they tell you a story about the rich history of the city, but they will also teach you how to make original souvenirs.

Backed by the Zagreb Tourist Board, the OmnisArt Association and the Zagreb City Museum organize a tourist programme titled The Witches of the Upper Town, which will familiarize guests with the dark history of 16th and 17th century Zagreb, the trials, tortures and masks of shame, as well as many other historic aspects of the city.

The free tour starts at 11 a.m. at Manduševac Fountain on Zagreb’s main square of Ban Josip Jelačić. Legend has it that witches once gathered there, so it is the ideal location to start this interesting journey…

It is not merely a sightseeing tour, but also an educational and creative excursion into the city’s past where guests are invited to partake and make their own witch themed souvenirs. Led by a licensed guide, the tour begins with the viewing of several landmarks and other specific locations in the city. The program continues at the Zagreb City Museum with a tour of the museum’s permanent collection, “Dissensions, Punishment and Superstition”. One can also take part in a creative workshop and make the “masks of shame” souvenirs, or participate in a dance performance whilst wearing the mask of shame, or attend a traditional fair that features traditionally produced items.

This sightseeing program takes place every Saturday until June 29th, except on the holiday on June 22nd. Participation in the program is free, but you should announce your arrival by email at info@omnisart.com.
