Live paintings at the Museum of the City of Zagreb

For the fourteenth year in a row, visitors to the Museum of the City of Zagreb will have the opportunity to enjoy the amazing Live Paintings. This two day event, which will take place on the 9th and 10th of February, features all of the museum’s staff dressing up as famous characters from Zagreb’s past and re-enacting scenes from its history.

Traditionally, on the last weekend before the beginning of the carnival season, which corresponds with the 9th and 10th of February this year, the Museum of the City of Zagreb will feature its famous Live Paintings. During the event the museum’s employees dress up as legendary characters from Zagreb’s past. They introduce themselves and converse with visitors while revealing all sorts of interesting information about the city, its history and everyday life as it once was. If you would like to learn more about the famous characters from Zagreb’s past, such as legendary novelist and journalist Marija Jurić Zagorka, emperor Franz Joseph, globally renowned opera prima donna Milka Trnina, writer Ljudevit Gaj, architect Herman Bolle and many others, make sure to visit the Upper Town and the Museum of the City of Zagreb.

The event will feature fifty costumed performers, each playing the part of a different historical figure whose talents and achievements contributed to the cultural, historic and everyday happenings in old Zagreb. In a casual atmosphere each of these characters will readily inform visitors about their importance, as well as tell stories about their character and the period they lived in.

Entry to the museum is free, and the museum’s impressive courtyard will be a place to socialize with the “old citizens of Zagreb” while enjoying mulled wine, tea and tasty delicacies. Beware, however, as the program does not last the entire day, but only between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
