Protection of Endangered Animal Species

Towards the end of June, the 83rd anniversary of the Zagreb ZOO was marked by daylong activities, such as exhibitions and creative workshops, as well as educational award quizzes and film projections. Located in the beautiful, over-200-year-old Maksimir Park near the city center, the Zagreb ZOO is a favored destination for numerous citizens, school-excursions, tourists, and families with children. The ZOO covers a surface of seven hectares, including a lake, and boasts a total of 275 animal species with plentiful space allocated for each animal.

Furthermore, the Zagreb ZOO actively participates in the European Endangered Species Program, which includes the protection of some 15 species at the Zagreb ZOO. In addition, it is a member of various international organizations and associations. Apart from animal protection and scientific work, the Zagreb ZOO also devotes a lot of time to education. There is an educational center within the ZOO itself, where children and family programs are designed to educate the public in an entertaining and interactive way. The visitors of the Zagreb ZOO can now also “adopt” certain animals by paying a donation to the ZOO. Upon signing the contract, they are granted care of the animal for a year. After the time has run out, the animal is returned to the ZOO or given into further adoption under the same terms. This is one of the implemented methods that raise awareness about the need to properly care for animals and protect these species in the wild. This is especially important among children who should be encouraged, from the earliest age, to learn about living in harmony with nature and to respect the necessity for preserving the delicate balance between humans and the wildlife that shares this planet.
