Rembrandt's Prints Descend upon Zagreb in December

The Arts and Crafts Museum has teamed up with the Old Masters' Gallery of the Joanneum Museum to present to Zagreb an exhibition of prints of one of the greatest baroque painters – Rembrandt Harmesz van Rijn. The exhibition opens on the 9th of December and remains open until 15 February 2009.

Dutch painter Rembrandt lived in the 17th century. He made a name for himself with the innovative portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of Biblical motifs. He is considered one of the greatest masters of painting and drawing in the history of European art. Prints were a great passion of his. He used excellent print skills to present classical iconography. He mastered the copper plate and deep etching techniques to perfection, turning them into fully fledged mediums suitable to his artistic styles. His prints are far from being sketches, studies or reproductions – they are true art forms which show extreme expressivity and remarkable artistic spirit.

The Arts and Crafts Museum was founded 128 years ago, as one of the first institutions of its kind in Europe. Today, its holdings boast over 10,000 items of fine and applied arts, spanning a period from the 14th to the 20th century. The permanent exhibit of approximately 3,000 pieces spreads over three floors of the museum and covers an area of over 2,000 square meters.

The museum has its own restoration workshops specializing in metal, ceramics and glass, textiles, paintings and polychromatic sculpture.

Before Rembrandt, between the 14th of October and the end of November, the museum will present a retrospective of the famous Croatian artist Dušan Džamonja.
