Return to the Old Roots

The recently opened Žunec Manor stands at the foot of Mt. Medvednica. It is to become the central feature of Zagreb’s future wine road, but it has already gained popularity as a favorite excursion spot for many citizens of the Croatian capital.

Žunec ManorŽunec Manor, located on Bajin Hill in Jasenovac on the eastern part of Mt. Medvednica, not more than 20 kilometers from the center of Zagreb, has recently opened its doors to visitors. It has been renovated in the traditional style of the region. Only reclaimed natural materials were used during the renovation project making the manor identical to those that were built 150 years ago. The manor’s dining room can accommodate up to a hundred guests with an additional room for 200 guests on the terrace. The manor has four double rooms and a suite. It is not only a catering establishment but a point of cultural interest as well. It is to become the central feature of Zagreb’s future wine road which will pass through the picturesque orchards and vineyards of Prigorje. That is why the renovation project was co-financed by the city of Zagreb, which invested a total of 600,000 Kuna, whereas the owner of the manor, Stjepan Bertović Žunec, invested over 10 million Kuna in the reconstruction of the building and the grounds around it.

Although the manor was opened only at the beginning of this year, it has already become a favorite excursion spot for many citizens of Zagreb. In addition to the restaurant and guest rooms, the manor also features a stable and a paddock, which are open to visitors daily. Visitors can also enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, and in the winter these are replaced by horse-drawn sleighs. The manor’s restaurant serves food prepared according to old recipes and made from the produce grown on the manor’s farm. Amongst other things, the host is proud to offer his guests natural fruit juices, seven types of brandy and four types of liqueurs.
