Maksimir Park was officially opened to the public in 1794 as the first public park in South-eastern Europe, and one of the first public parks in the world. It spreads across a surface of 316 hectares; it is renowned for its flora and fauna typical of flatland forests, and features five lakes. The park has been designed in the English landscape style and it is protected as a monument of park architecture and a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia.
Maksimir features various structures, most notably the Swiss House and the Echo Pavilion, both built around 1840, as well as the chapel of St. George and the most prominent structure in the park, the gazebo, also built in mid 19th century.
Maksimir Park played a significant role in the early days of many sports and games in Zagreb, and it still offers visitors a wide variety of sporting and recreational activities such as walking along well maintained paths, Nordic walking, jogging, bicycling and rowing on the third lake, while the youngest visitors can play in two modern playgrounds, go horseback riding on ponies, etc.
The park also features the restaurant Maksimir, the Swiss House bistro, the Gazebo coffee bar and several other similar facilities, while the southern side of the park houses the Zagreb Zoo. Also located in the vicinity is Maksimir Stadium of the Dinamo Zagreb football club.
