“Symphony of a Thousand” by Gustav Mahler

To celebrate 20 years of Croatia and Slovenia’s independence, as well as the 140th anniversary of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, on July 4th more than 1100 musicians from the two countries will gather at the Zagreb Arena to perform Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand”, one of the greatest masterpieces of music ever composed. On July 4th, Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand” will unite more than 1100 musicians from Croatia and Slovenia on the stage of the Zagreb Arena. Along with the large philharmonic orchestra, which will be conducted by the charismatic maestro Valerij Gergijev, a large mixed children’s choir – consisting of 900 members and eight vocal soloists – will also be performing as part of this mega-spectacle.
The “Symphony of a Thousand” is Gustav Mahler’s 8th symphony and, along with Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th symphony, it is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of classical music ever composed. Since its performance requires such a large number of musicians, the symphony also represents a top class social event. This mega-spectacle, under the high auspices of the president of the Republic of Croatia, Ivo Josipović, will mark the 20 years of Croatia and Slovenia’s independence, as well as 140th anniversary of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra.
