The Number of Visitors on the Rise

The medieval Zrinski Mine, which was built on the hillsides of Zagrebačka Gora back in the 16th century, is currently open to visitors and an ever-increasing number can soon experience the former silver-mine’s treasures though a network of new tunnels that will cover 150 meters.

Rudnik ZrinskiThe Medieval Zrinski Mine, built on the hillsides of Zagrebačka Gora back in the 16th century, will be expanded by another 150 meters of accessible tunnels by March 1st. Historically, the mine was a rich source of silver while, today, it is the only medieval mine in Croatia open to public. It was proclaimed part of Croatian cultural heritage in 2006. The mine is located within the Medvednica Nature Park, in an area called the “Mine Garden”. All of its tunnels are well lit while the sound effects and statues of miners depict a realistic picture of the life of silver miners as it was in medieval times. The mine attracts an increasing numbers of visitors every year and one of the main tourist events, Medieval Days on Mt. Medvednica, draws its inspiration from the mine. This cultural event reinvigorates the spirit of the Middle Ages, when coins were minted from silver. This period event, organized every year, takes its visitors on a historical journey and allows them to play an active part in it. Aside from observing the miners at work, and watching how they dig out silver and mint coins from it, visitors can make their very own silver coins. The knights in the service of Mistress Jelena Tahi also stage a battle to “defend” the mine from forest bandits and take the opportunity to demonstrate numerous skills involving sword fighting, archery, and skills with various other weapons, including sledge-hammers. Furthermore, all who wish to learn any of these skills can attend appropriate workshops. Meanwhile, a medieval market provides a glimpse of the old crafts and offers an opportunity to buy medicinal herbs and various honey-based delicacies. When newly restored tunnels are opened, the Zrinski Mine is bound to receive even greater number of visitors. They are eagerly awaited by professional guides who will be happy to take them on organized sight-seeing tours.
