The Trieste Barcolana at the Italian Culture Institute

Fulvio Molinari, a writer and journalist of Croatian origin, has prepared an interesting exhibition of the last Barcolana, a major regatta which has been taking place in Trieste since 1969.

Until 7 December, the Italian Culture Institute will offer its visitors the opportunity to see an interesting photo exhibition entitled ‘The Trieste Barcolana’ which depicts scenes from the traditional namesake regatta. The exhibition opened in mid-October with an interesting lecture by the writer and journalist, Fulvio Molinari, entitled ‘Maritime Traditions in Trieste, Istria and Dalmatia and the Barcolana Phenomenon’.

The traditional Barcolana was first organized in 1969. Since then, it has been held every year at the same time – the second Sunday in October. This is the Autumn Cup, the final regatta before the winter break which was first launched by a group of sailors from Barcola, a maritime suburb of Trieste. The Zagreb exhibition depicts the most attractive moments of last year’s regatta.

Fulvio Molinari, an Italian writer and journalist, was born in Vrsar in 1937. At the age of eight, he left his native country with his parents on board a ship and they found shelter in Trieste. He was a correspondent for the Italian State Television in all the countries of Eastern Europe, Germany and Austria and particularly in the former Yugoslavia.
