Toshiko Akiyoshi and the 20th Spring Jazz Review

Zagreb’s jazz aficionados are in for a real treat this April with some superb upcoming jazz events; on April 11th, the great Japanese jazz star, Toshiko Akiyoshi, will perform at the Teatar ITD, while between the 13th and the 16th of April, the small stage of the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall will be the venue for the 20th Spring Jazz Review.

Jazz aficionados will have an opportunity to enjoy this particular music genre throughout April; on April 11th, Zagreb’s Teatar ITD will be the venue for a performance by the great Japanese jazz star, eighty-year-old Toshiko Akiyoshi, who will be accompanied by the large jazz orchestra of the Croatian Musical Youth.
The legendary Japanese musician with an American address is known in the world of jazz as the first woman to win the award for best arranger and composer, which is bestowed by the renowned American jazz magazine, “Downbeat”. She also has the prestigious Jazz Master title, granted by the American National Endowment for the Arts, and she is the first Japanese national to have attended the renowned Boston music college at Berklee. This highly talented jazz pianist and leader of the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra will treat the Zagreb audience to piano performances from the “Sunday Nights" cycle of concerts.
Several days later, between the 13th and the 16th of April, the small stage of the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall will be the venue for the traditional 20th Spring Jazz Review organized by the Jazz Club of the Croatian Association of Composers. The Review will feature an alluring style of concert jazz, which is somewhat different to club and open-air performances. Numerous relevant Croatian, as well as foreign, musicians will participate.
Among many famous names, we must mention the great of the Croatian jazz scene, Boško Petrović. The second day of the Review is reserved for the Thana Pavelić Quartet. As a young Croatian musician who lives in New York, Thana Pavelić is initiating a successful international music career; for the upcoming Zagreb performance, she has gathered some of the best musicians from the region.
Among the foreign performers, the Review will feature the leading Swiss jazz pianist of the younger generation, Christoph Stiefel and his Inner Language Trio, as well as Chuck Marohnic, the renowned American jazz pianist of Croatian origin. The Review will be closed with the performance by the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra, conducted by the renowned British conductor and arranger Michael Gibbs.
Individual ticket prices are 70 kuna, while a complete ticket package for all concerts can be purchased at a 25 percent discount.
