From the 50s to the 70s of the last century, a favourite pastime of Zagreb citizens was dancing. Generations of young people have grown up while following world trends and dancing to the rhythms of the most popular rock, jazz and swing hits. Today, Dance Evenings in Zrinjevac revive the spirit of those old Zagreb’s dances.

Zagreb and its surrounding area are known for numerous folklore societies, some of which were founded more than a century ago. Dressed in their beautiful and unique folk costumes, the members of the societies will bring their folk customs, songs, and dances to the streets of Zagreb.

In the 17th century, during the Thirty Years’ War, the Croatian light cavalry, renowned for its exceptional heroism, joined the ranks of the French Army. Military skills and the original appearance of the Croatian soldiers were affirmed in 1664 with the founding of the Croatian regiment “the Royal Cravates” within the French Army. A special feature of their uniforms was a red scarf – a tie that girls used to tie around young men’s necks before going to war.

Tie, the essential fashion accessory of every man originates from those brave Croatian soldiers. The reinstated ceremony of the Changing of the Guard, based on the historical evidence, can be seen in predetermined attractive tourist locations. The program is done by 13 infantrymen and 4 cavalrymen.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD PROGRAM:

11:30 a.m. – 11:35 a.m. – Merging of the cavalry and infantry ranks and flag handover (Crossing of Ilica and Mesnička streets)

11:35 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. – March of the Cravat Regiment along Ilica Street to Ban Josip Jelačić Square

11:50 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Arrival to the Ban Josip Jelačić Square, flag salute, formation and rank and weapon inspection ceremony.

12 p.m. – 12:05 p.m. – Guard posting at Ban Josip Jelačić statue.

12:05 p.m. – 12:10 p.m. – March to the plateau in front of the Cathedral.

12:10 p.m. – 12:15 p.m.– Guard posting at the Virgin Mary statue in front of the Cathedral

12:15 p.m. DIVISION OF THE RANKS / FLAG HANDOVER

Departure of the infantry rank to Tkalčićeva Street by the following route; Kaptol – Dolac – Opatovina – Bishop Duh Steps – Tkalčićeva.

Departure of the calvary rank by the following route: Kaptol – Mikloušićeva Street – Tkalčićeva Street / to the Bishop Duh Steps.
